Happenings

It must be the nature of blogs to have bursts of postings followed by long periods of nothing.  That has been the case with my blog and numerous others I’ve followed on the Web.  That’s life by the way.  We plan things out and intend to follow our plans  but then something unexpected comes along and we find ourselves off course.  This of course is the reason goal setting is so critical to getting things done.

This past year I’ve been busy, very busy.  In the time since my last post I’ve changed jobs, changed homes and even changed countries.  After 10 years working for a Fortune 50 company based in the United States I got a wild hair up my a** and decided to cast that aside to pursue a position running a
company in the United Kingdom.

It’s in a complementary business to what I’ve been doing and aside from giving me the opportunity to live in another country it provides me with a laboratory to try out some of my business theories and philosophies in the hard crucible of reality.  It has been my experience that even in the best of times theory is oft trumped by reality, so this has been a great opportunity.  The fact the world is going through a major economic crisis, which I believe is only going to get worse in the coming months and years, is just an added kicker to the pile.

So the past year has, like any major redirection in life, taught me some significant lessons that I hope to relay to others in my web posts, training’s and yes, in my upcoming book.  Nothing like taking over a struggling company floundering without a solid business model to learn some harsh lessons about life and business.  Because of this new direction I’ve taken in life I’ve decided to integrate some new elements into my blogs.  I will include postings on my travels as well as lessons in business in addition to my renewed focus on body language, persuasion and influence.

So today is a lazy Sunday with no real plans.  Tomorrow it’s back to business as usual and, at least according to plan, I will be adding many more blogs on business, travel, body language, persuasion and the craziness going on in the world.  For today it’s time to relax.

Book Review – Speak Human

I just completed reading an interesting and different marketing book entitled, Speak Human: Outmarket the Big Guys by Getting Personal which takes a much different tack on marketing than your typical business book.  The book is all about bringing business down to the personal or “human” level.  You can read my review here…Speak Human Book Review.

The book got me to thinking, how can one set themselves apart from the pack to become the “obvious choice”, not only in business, but in all areas of life – dating, friendship, career, etc.  One does it by connecting and communicating with people on a personal level.  This is especially appealing these days because with the fast pace of modern life I think we are largely missing the human element.  Many people lack a connection.

Want to be more successful in all areas of your life, and happier too?  It’s an old business maxim that, if your wondering what business to start or be involved in one only need look out into the marketplace and find a need that is not being filled.  Once you find this need you simply need to build that business around it.  Well, a sense of connection and belonging to something or someone greater then themselves is a need not being filled for most people.  If you can fill this need, along with whatever product or service your business is offering then you will find a virtually endless supply of business.  This works outside business as well.  Need a larger social circle? Then be the person that cares about the other person more than yourself.

I mention this only because I think this is the missing element in many people’s approach to business and to life.  We are in an age, at least in the United States, where people simply don’t interact with one another.  I move around a lot and one of the things that continues to amaze and baffle me is how hard it is to connect with one’s neighbors.  On more than one occasion I’ve engaged in hour long discussions with my next door neighbors only to have them act as if we’ve never met the following day.  Weird, but characteristic of how jaded people are to starting new relationships, especially in today’s highly mobile and fluid culture.

So I think this is where the magic is in today’s world – connecting with people, focusing on them and making them feel special. This is the secret to having a successful business; this is the secret to having a happy and successful life.

First Impression secrets – Hair

While your clothes have a big, massive and important impact on the first impressions you make there are two other factors you need manage in order to make a powerful and positive first impression.  Your choice of shoes and how you chose to wear your hair communicates, more than any other one factor, where you stand on the social ladder.

Think about it.  Your hair and shoes, located at the top and bottom of your body, are the “vanity points” that communicate your self-image. They tell others what you think about yourself so you owe it to yourself to convey the right message.  Here are some pointers on hair.

*Success Secret* -  People judge you greatly based on how well you groom yourself.  Taking the time trouble and effort to be well groomed shows that you are the type of person who will put in the extra effort needed to be of greater service or value to your employer.

First Impressions and Hair

Having your hair well-groomed, clean and styled appropriately communicates confidence, good taste and a positive self-image to those around you.  In a business environment this says you are a professional who takes things seriously.  There is a lot of controversy, read as resistance, when it comes to advise on how to wear your hair but clear rules and guidelines do exist.  Basically, whatever social group or industry you are either in or hope to join will determine what length of hair and style is appropriate for you.  The message you want to send will also have a big impact on the style and length you choose.  The important thing to remember is that hair sends a message.  Be sure it’s the message you want to send.

In a business environment women should cut their hair to shoulder length or shorter.  Shorter hair on a woman is a sign of maturity and professionalism.  Conversely, longer hair is usually worn by younger women and, while it represents youth and immaturity it will prevent you from being taken as seriously in a business environment.  In nonverbal communication there is a tremendous amount of energy and power conveyed through the eyes. Don’t let your hair hide your eyes, which can interfere with the all important eye contact.

Keep in mind that your hair communicates your youth, health and vitality or lack of the same.  Keep it clean and shiny to show it off in it’s best light.  Use hair color to avoid looking too old.  While some gray, especially on a man, can convey maturity and experience, too much gray gives the impression that your best years are behind you, and you don’t want to give this impression.

Did you know that the higher up you are on the social-economic ladder the more attention you pay to grooming yourself? It’s true.  For this reason it’s a good idea to take the time to visit the barber or stylist on a regular basis.

Haircut advice for men for making a great first impression.

Get a haircut every two weeks.  It’s as simple as that.  Getting a haircut every two weeks ensures that you’ll never look like you waited too long to get a haircut. Subconsciously, this conveys that you are that type of person who pays close attention to detail.

Look around your company, your industry and the group you want to be accepted by.  What is the most common hairstyle?  Mimic that style. Like attracts and impresses.  The more you look like the people you want to impress and belong to the more they will see you as someone who will fit into their group.

Human beings are herd animals and feel more comfortable associating with and being around people just like them.  The more similar the better.  Hairstyles, aside from being a matter of taste, are also a part of the uniform adopted by that group or sub-group.  Wearing your hair significantly longer or shorter is a serious error.  You will be consciously choosing to wear a uniform different than the one worn by your peers, or hoped for peers.

For men, when it comes to toupee’s it’s best to say no.  Toupee’s tell people your insecure, deceptive and lack confidence.  They are also almost impossible to conceal…everyone will know you’re wearing a toupee.
